I was surprised when I sat down and did the numbers (based on the Council's own data) to find that making access to swimming pools free to the community would actually cost the Council much less than I anticipated. Others have checked the logic of my argument and the numbers and been similarly surprised. This is a matter of social equity. Why should those who live near Merewether and Newcastle ocean baths have free access to saltwater pools when access to suburban pools costs enough to discourage their use, despite the health benefits?
